Jesus said: “Come to me,
all
you who are weary and find life burdensome, and I will refresh
you. Take my yoke upon your shoulders and learn
from me, for I am gentle and humble of heart. Your souls will find
rest, for my yoke is easy
and my burden light.”

"Sick
and tired of this world, there’s no more air, trippin’ over
myself, goin’
nowhere, waiting, suffocating, no direction, and I took a dive. And on the way down, I saw you and you saved
me from myself. I almost fell through, but I held on to you. I’ve been wondering why it’s only me. Have you always been inside, waiting to
breathe. It’s alright, sunlight on my
face. I wake up and yeah, I’m alive. I
was so afraid of going under, but now the weight of the world feels
like
nothing."

Cabrera’s song is a love song of a man who has seen very
difficult times sung to a very important friend in
his life. That friend saw the difficulties that he had to face: he had
given in to depression, feeling that no one could really understand
what he was going through. He was lost, and almost "fell through,"
wondering if life was worth it.
The Christian can look at the song and realize that there may be friends who can help the way that the person in the song was helped, and it is a time to be thankful to such a friend. But more than anyone, the Christian can look at God as such a friend, and turning to our God, we can find someone to hold on to, even as we are "on the way down" in life, that is, when we feel badly. The world we live in is indeed often a world that makes us sick and tired, and we find ourselves weary and we find our lives burdensome. And even as we are ready to take the dive, "on the way down," we see the Lord and accept his weight, his yoke, his presence, deliberately reaching out to him. And he saves us from ourselves, giving us the rest that we need, the breath of air that sustains us, the life-giving sunlight that restores us. And the weight of his presence is all that we need, enabling us to know that now the weight of the world feels like nothing, because we can wake up and feel alive. We have the power of life that comes from holding on to the Lord. |

THOUGHT
What
are the ways that we can hold on to the Lord in our lives?
PRAYER Good
and gracious God, my life often grows burdensome and I feel tired and
sick of what
the world sends me. Help me take your yoke
and
place it upon me so that your power can direct me. Be
with me, I pray.
