MATTHEW 5:13-16

Salt and Light

Prayerthoughts

a. Jesus tells me that I am salt, the means to make others feel good about themselves and giving the ingredient of sincere faith to them. When I study how I interact with others, in general, am I person that wants to help them in some way?

b. He also calls me the light of the world. I am not the light that Jesus was, of course, but what is the principal message that I am giving others by the life that I am leading?

c. I give light to everyone I meet, whether I am thinking of it or not. Do I include in my prayers the people that I only incidentally meet.

d. Jesus calls attention to my deeds, and making sure they are “good.” As I study my actions yesterday, would they be called “good” or “not so good.”

My prayerthoughts…

Today, I will read 1 Corinthians 2:1-5 and write an important thought from it.

Some Thoughts on the Liturgy

SALT AND LIGHT

+ There is one passage of Scripture that should be read a couple of times a year at one sitting in my opinion: Matthew 5-7, what we have called the Sermon on the Mount

- the Gospels over the next couple of Sundays in Ordinary Time will present that passage

- we heard the beginning of the Sermon last Sunday with the Beatitudes, the general introduction to the way we should behave in a moral manner

- this Sunday we hear two important images as Jesus begins his Sermon on the Mount

- he taught his disciples to be salt and to be light

+ I think that “salt” could mean the knowledge that we must have in order to be the Christians that we should be

- we need knowledge of what Jesus wanted before we can practice it

- that’s what our religious faith education program is all about

- it’s the reason we spend so much time with our young people trying to teach them the Christian Way (Catholic school)

- it’s the reason we suggest spiritual reading

- it’s the reason why we have the Catechism of the Catholic Church

- I’ll give you a copy if you don’t have one

- a portion of which we should all read every once in a while

+ But there is much more than learning involved in Christianity

- those of us who are a little older remember two dates that we will never forget--when President John Kennedy was killed in November of 1963 and September 11, 2001

- one of the radio broadcasters who was in the motorcade during the president’s assassination said some words that really struck me that day

- they could have been said at either of those times

- as the broadcaster was describing what was happening in Dallas, suddenly the whole motorcade that was going through Dallas began going toward one of the hospitals there, and he said

- something is terribly wrong here

- and I think that is one of the best descriptions of why we need a guide for our world

- something is terribly wrong in our world and we need people who will try to repair it

- I believe that is what Jesus meant when he taught us that we must be lights to the world

- not only are we salt, that is, people who must know what Jesus taught, but especially we must be people who are lights,

- people who are able to help the things that are terribly wrong in the world

+ Our life situation may not be what would be called “high profile”

- we are not going to be called on to be the principal performer at the half-time of the Super Bowl

- we are not going to have our names written in the history books of the third millennium

- but we all live some place and there are people around us

- we work some place with other people

- we say words to others

- we interact with and influence people in one way or another

- we are called to be Christian lights in our own circumstances

+ Most of you know that I work with popular music

- and there are some excellent songs that we can learn from if you can stand the music

- “Firework” by Katy Perry is one of them and a lot can be learned from it

- “Scars to Your Beautiful” by Alessia Cara is another one

- but let me suggest that you listen to a song by the band X Ambassadors and the name of it is “Unsteady” from a couple years ago

- it is a song that talks about the importance of Moms and Dads, and I think it should be required listening for everyone who decides to have a family. “Hold on,” the young person sings because he/she is a little unsteady. “Mama,” the child sings, “come here. Daddy, I’m alone ‘cause this house don’t feel like home. If you love me, don’t let go. Hold on to me.”

- those are some of the words; you would do well to look up all of the words on the Internet

- and the tie in here:

- we all have the salt or spark—Christian knowledge, Jesus’ Sermons—within us

- and for parents, they know how a Christian should behave toward their children

- our job is to ignite that spark—make us as parents exactly what we should be for our children

+ Just about every spiritual reading from the Scriptures and books that are written to help our spiritual life have these two elements as part of them

- salt, that is, knowledge of the faith; and light, that is the carrying out of the faith

- today’s readings from Isaiah and Paul show that as well

- our prayer today is that we will be the salt and the light to our world.

MEDIA PRESENTATION

Song: "Heat Waves" -- Glass Animals

VULNERABILITY CAN BE POSITIVE

The Gospel

JOHN 13:36-38

Simon Peter said to him, "Master, where are you going?" Jesus answered [him], "Where I am going, you cannot follow me now, though you will follow later." Peter said to him, "Master, why can't I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you." Jesus answered, "Will you lay down your life for me? Amen, amen, I say to you, the cock will not crow before you deny me three times."

Gospelthink: Jesus predicts that Peter will deny him. Have I denied the Lord by some of my words, actions or thoughts?

Last night all I think about is you; can’t make you happier now. Usually I put something on TV so we never think about you and me, but today I see our reflections clearly; in Hollywood, laying on the screen. You just need a better life than this. Heat waves been faking me out. You can't fight it, you can't breathe, you say somethin' so lovin' but I gotta let you go. I don't wanna be alone. You know it hurts me too. You'll be better off in someone new. I'll say goodbye."

There was immense pain involved in Jesus' act of redemption. The physical pain was part of it, but another part of it, and perhaps even more painful for the human Jesus, was the pain of rejection. He knew, for example, that his close friend Peter would deny him, and so he felt it from the depths of his being. At the same time, he knew that he would move on with his redemptive love.

Studied from Peter's point of view, there was immense pain for him as well as he looked back at Jesus's prediction and then his denial (John 18:17.25-27). It was an extremely painful thing for Peter to admit his humanness. But it is important to see that Peter was able to move on in his life, even though the pain would remain.

Love of another in a romantic way can cause pain because we never know what our futures will be, and likewise we never know how the other will eventually feel. It is a chance that we take, and in the Christian understanding of things, we are called to show such love to everyone. Jesus showed the way by giving us the example of love no matter what the pain.

The group Glass Animals' song "Heat Waves"
is a song of a man in the relationship who broke up with his fiancée for some reason and now is looking at that relationship in a philosophical way. According to the leader of the group, the song is about realizing you cannot make everyone happy. And when we try to, then we have to cover up our feelings and hide inside TV shows or video games or drink or drugs.  Being vulnerable should be a positive thing, he says.

We are human beings, and in the course of our lives, certainly our love lives, because we are human, there is a chance that we will hurt someone or hurt ourselves. It is clear in Glass Animals' song. But what is important for us is to realize that there will be pain--we are vulnerable--but we will have a chance to move on in life and love.

PRAYER

Good and gracious God, being human is something that You knew because Your only Son Jesus became human. He therefore knew pain. Help us be able to understand our pain, and understand that sometimes we hurt others. Give us the grace to always love as you taught us. Be with us, we pray.

GUIDE FOR CLASSROOM PRESENTATION AND PERSONAL ENRICHMENT

Theme: We must understand that because of our human nature, we will be hurt, but we can move on in life.

1. What does the song "Heat Waves" teach young people today?
2. Describe your opinion of what Peter the Apostle was like.
3. Where do you see the most pain in the world right now?
4. [not to be shared with the group] In your own life right now, where is the most difficult pain, and what is the best way to work with it?
5. In general, what are the ways to "work with" the pain that we experience in our lives?
6. In general in your opinion, is our world following Jesus's directive to love?
